In Mahayana Buddhist sutras he was a king in a remote period of time. Renouncing his kingdom, he became a monk & was named Dharmakara, which means Treasury of Dharma. Inspired by the teachings of the then Buddha of that time, Lokesvaraja Buddha, who taught him the way to supreme enlightenment many aeons ago, he made 48 great vows for saving sentient beings. The 18th Vow, which is the basis of the Pure Land: If upon the attainment of Buddhahood all sentient beings in the 10 quarters who aspire in sincerity & faith to be reborn in my land, recite my name up to 10 times & fail to be born there, then may I not attain Perfect Enlightenment. Since then, Bodhisattva Dharmakara, after 5 aeons of self-cultivation, finally attained Supreme Enlightenment & became the Buddha Amitabha. His grand & infinitely compassionate vow is now a reality, paradise known as Pure Land Sukhavati has been established, suffering beings must & will be delivered if only they will have the full faith to call upon his name. In this practice 3 important qualities must be present in the mind: Sincerity, Faith & Aspiration to be reborn in the Pure Land. The simple prayer or formula that one needs to repeat is: NAMO O-MI-TO FWO/One may repeat it in Sanskrit Namo Amitabha Buddha which literally means Homage to the Amitabha Buddha or I seek refuge in the Amitabha Buddha. Dharani For Rooting Out Karmic Obstructions & For Being Reborn In the Pure Land: In Praise Of Amitabha. Amitabha's body is the color of gold, The splendor of his hallmarks has no peer; The light of his brow shines around a hundred worlds, Wide as the seas are his eyes pure & clear. Shining in his brilliance by transformation, Are countless Bodhisattvas & infinite Buddhas. His 48 vows will be our liberation, In 9 lotus stages we reach the farthest shore. Homage to the Buddha of the Western Pure Land, Kind & Compassionate Amitabha (3x) Namo Amita Buddha (recite at length).
